CLAVERING PARISH CHURCHYARD

There are several hundred gravestones remaining in Clavering parish churchyard – this must be only a fraction of the thousands who have been buried there since the first church was built in medieval or even Saxon times. The earliest surviving gravestones are 18th century, but these are few in number. Gravestone inscriptions become unreadable over time, so it is very useful that for the south, north and east churchyard sections, those inscriptions still readable were surveyed in 1978 by Eileen Ludgate and the former Clavering Local History Group. I have now (2006) checked and updated this listing and below is a list of 185 persons whose final resting place is known. Not all these inscriptions are still readable, and some stones have been moved. If anyone is visiting Clavering in search of particular ancestors, please contact me for a copy of the plan, which in most cases shows the position of the stones. In some cases it may be possible to supply inscriptions and/or a photograph. The list and plan are also being deposited with the Essex Monumental Inscriptions organizer (part of the Essex Society for Family History). Please note the list below relates only to those parts of the churchyard to the south, east and north of the parish church and shows the surname, first names and date of death (where this can be read). The vast majority of these are pre-20th century, but there are a few more recent interments. Most of the 20th century burials are in the west churchyard (to the left of the footpath running south to north from Church End to the Castle area) – there are hundreds of burials here, of which the church has a plan. It is hoped to record these later on, likewise the Congregational (URC) churchyard, where there are a further 130 gravestones.
