Local writer and historian, Jacqueline Cooper, has published a new book entitled History Walks in Clavering - A journey in time through an Essex village. The book contains ten walks all around this large and very beautiful parish in north-west Essex. Using footpaths and lanes, the routes take both walkers and armchair travellers on a journey back in time from prehistory to the Millennium. The book begins with an introductory stroll around the village centre, with its wealth of ancient buildings, and concludes with a record of the 2000 Beating of the Bounds. Others include a walk to the Roman road, an exploration of the medieval countryside, the topography of Clavering in Georgian times, various themes of 19th and 20th century social history, such as poverty and protest, crime and war, and including the memories of older villagers. Illustrated with splendid drawings by local artist Wendy Upson, maps by Carol Wilkinson and old photographs, this book offers a detailed insight into the history of a remarkable village in some of the most beautiful countryside in Essex.
