Clavering resident Peter Cooper has published a book describing a new long-distance route round the whole district. Named 'The Uttlesford Way', it covers 16 local villages in a series of circular walks.
The third book in the Clavering Remembered Series features the late Fred Sampford Fred's varied career is described in vivid terms - farming, catering and decorating - and his 22 years as caretaker at the Village Hall.

The first book in the Clavering Remembered Series, featuring Olwen Livings, has done so well that we are now able to produce Vol 2, which features George Barker, one of the oldest residents of Clavering, aged 96 at the time of publication.
George moved here as a child in 1924 and lived at the former Swan pub in the High Street. As well as his memories of pre-war Clavering, the book describes George's Army experiences before and during WW2 - Dunkirk, D-Day and Doodlebugs.
A current research project in Clavering is to find out more about WW2 as it affected the village, both on the Home Front and in the lives of those who worked away from home in the Forces or reserved occupations. Many of the wartime residents are no longer with us, and others have moved away, so I am hoping that this internet appeal will spread the net wider. We would be most grateful to hear about any pictures/memories/ephemera re wartime organisations on the Home Front, or photos in uniform of Clavering people in the Forces.
