WW2 in Clavering CLAVERING BOOK: Copies are still available of No 1 in our series of Oral History booklets launched at Christmas: |
|
A current research project in Clavering is to find out more about WW2 as it affected the village, both on the Home Front and in the lives of those who worked away from home in the Forces or reserved occupations. Many of the wartime residents are no longer with us, and others have moved away, so I am hoping that this internet appeal will spread the net wider. We would be most grateful to hear about any pictures/memories/ephemera re wartime organisations on the Home Front, or photos in uniform of Clavering people in the Forces. The then vicar, Rev Ernest Stone compiled a list of names of those he knew were serving, and this is added below. In most cases, we are lacking information on their wartime work, and would love to know more. It is a very long list - over 100 ordinary villagers, who gave some of the best years of their life (and in six cases, actually lost their lives) in order to help make the world safe for us to live in. It seems important and urgent to make sure we have a local record. Are there relatives or friends who can suggest a contact or point towards sources? If there are any contributions, there is no need to part with original material, as it is so easy to scan and return items.
